Uncoupling Membranes

The original uncoupling membrane, Schlüter®-DITRA 25 has been a proven solution for uncoupling membranes and bonded waterproofing since 1987. Tried, tested and trusted worldwide, Schlüter®-DITRA 25 provides waterproofing, uncoupling, crack-bridging and vapour pressure management for complete protection in tile and stone installations.

What is an uncoupling membrane?

An uncoupling membrane system provides an intermediate substrate between the tile covering and load bearing substrate. They can be used over a variety of substrates, which include timber, concrete, cementitious screeds and gypsum based screeds. They are designed to neutralise lateral stresses that occur between the substrate and tile covering; they are not designed to accomodate differential vertical movement (deflection).

How does an uncoupling membrane work?

The membrane works by preventing stresses from the substrate being transferred into the tile covering that can cause cracking and delamination of the covering material.

As substrates will expand and contract due to changes in temperature and moisture levels, an uncoupling membrane is perfect for allowing the surfaces to move independently preventing stress on the tiles which can cause cracking or even debonding. This is because the membrane uncouples the floor covering from the substrate and neutralises the tensions between the substrate and the tile covering that result from the varying deformations of the materials. Likewise, stress cracks in the substrate are bridged and are, therefore, not transferred to the surface covering.

How do you install an uncoupling membrane?

To install Schlüter®-DITRA 25:
The mat is fixed to a solid substrate using a suitable adhesive.
Easily cut to size using a utility knife or suitable alternative.
Adhere the tiles over the top using a suitable tile adhesive.
