Saving energy with ceramic tiles

Schlüter®-BEKOTEC-THERM

"Heated floor assemblies made with ceramic tiles are economical, space-saving, and enhance living comfort, making them an ideal fit for the “Saving Energy with Ceramic Tiles” initiative. This concept was developed by Werner Altmayer, the Chairman of the Federation of European Tile Fixers' Association (EUF), and brings together distinguished European retailers, manufacturers, and tile contractor associations to present consumers with solutions for healthy living and energy savings with ceramic coverings.  The innovative ceramic thermal-comfort floor Schlüter®-BEKOTEC-THERM to be presented by Schlüter-Systems at BAU 2011 is a perfect match for the initiative, in which Schlüter is a partner. The BEKOTEC-THERM system eliminates the problems of conventional assemblies and in comparison protects the environment along with the homeowner's pocketbook.

This is made possible with a special, thin screed assembly with a core consisting of a specialty studded panel of polystyrene or foil, which can be covered with conventional screed mortar and allows for screed thicknesses from 31 mm. Prior to the installation of the screed, the heating pipes are tightly secured between the studs. Since the screed cover over the heating pipes is just 8 mm, the discharge temperature is located closely to the surface. The interconnected air channels of the uncoupling membrane Schlüter®-DITRA between the screed and the tiles result in quick and even heat distribution and create an effective, highly responsive floor heating system. The system is able to create consistent room temperatures of 22°C with supply temperatures of approximately 30°C and can easily be set to lower temperatures at night. This generates a customized, cozy living environment that makes ""healthy living with tiles"" a reality. As a result, the heating system uses far less energy than conventional systems, which require supply temperatures ranging from 38 to 45 °C.

As a rule of thumb, every degree is the equivalent of 2-3% of energy costs (if the system is operated with the identical energy source). In keeping with the name “ceramic thermal-comfort floor” and the motto of “More fun with tiles,” the system can also be used for interior cooling in the summertime. Conventional systems require a screed coverage of at least 45 mm over the heating pipes, which includes the thickness of the pipes. This means that screeds are significantly thicker than 60 mm. From the perspective of construction physics, this has turned out to be a disadvantage, since the typical temperature fluctuations of heated floor assemblies lead to buckling and cracking in such conventional screed layers. In tile coverings, these changes often are evident as widened perimeter joints under the baseboard or as cracks that continue into the tiles. The innovative BEKOTEC-THERM system eliminates these problems. Hundreds of thousands of installed square meters of this patented system are proof that BEKOTEC virtually prevents all buckling in screeds. Together with the uncoupling membrane Schlüter®-DITRA, cracks in tile coverings can be avoided as well. As an additional advantage that is of particular interest to builders and developers, BEKOTEC-THERM can be completely installed in just three days and is ready to operate after another seven days. Thanks to the uncoupling technology mentioned above, no expansion joints are needed in the screed. Due to its especially low supply temperature, the ceramic thermal-comfort floor Schlüter®-BEKOTEC-THERM is ideally suited for operation with systems that use renewable energy sources such as heat pumps or solar systems. In the long term, this results in further savings and protects the environment – true to the theme of “Saving energy with ceramic tiles”!
