Great Northern Hotel | Schlüter-Systems

World's first great railway hotel gets a first-class ticket to quality thanks to Schlüter-Systems

An exquisitely designed luxury boutique hotel in an extraordinary location has recently undergone a renovation that has seen the installation of market leading products from Schlüter-Systems.

Located in the heart of King’s Cross St Pancras, the distinct curved building of the Great Northern Hotel first opened in 1854 and was designed by Victorian master builder Lewis Cubitt. A bold stamp on the busy, modern day London landscape, this elegant 19th century hotel has now been beautifully re-designed to accommodate modern needs whist still retaining its original Victorian charm.

Such a renovation has meant the need for high quality products that will stand the test of time, just like this hotel has for over 150 years. So, with this in mind only the very best was used when it came to ensuring the hotel’s new flooring was secure and sound proof - Schlüter®-DITRA-SOUND.

Providing the hotel’s new acoustic flooring with protection and security, Schlüter®-DITRA-SOUND, along with Schlüter®-KERDI-COLL sealant adhesive and Schlüter®-KERDI-KEBA sealing band, were specified by the project’s architect. Installed throughout the hotel, these top quality products have ensured that the hotel’s new installations such as its flooring can evoke all the glamour and grace of the hotel’s long history, whilst still implementing high quality modern technology from Schlüter-Systems to reduce sound impact.

The Head of Marketing at Schlüter-Systems Ltd, comments “To have our products installed at, and become part of, one of the world’s very first railway hotels is a real honour. The Great Northern Hotel is truly iconic and products such as Schlüter®-DITRA-SOUND will ensure this beautiful and elegant hotel will be full of the sounds of happy guests whilst the flooring remains protected, secure and silent.”

Thanks to being made of a heavy polyethylene mat, Schlüter®-DITRA-SOUND is the perfect choice for the Great Northern Hotel and has been the choice of many other top London hotels. It not only reduces the impact sound in airborne noise by 50% (13 dB test values according to DIN EN ISO 140-8), but it also provides durability thanks to its anchoring fleece which is laminated on both sides to bond with tile adhesive. This means that cracks and debonding area prevented.

“Schlüter®-DITRA-SOUND is ideally suited for renovation and refurbishment projects as not only does the heavy mat material absorb much of the impact sound created by foot traffic, but the product also boasts the ability to be used to bridge cracks and provide long-term durability. Such multiple qualities within Schlüter®-DITRA-SOUND has made it a trusted product within the industry.”
