Schlüter and Partners Create a New Shower for Ex-Plumber in Need

In collaboration with two of its close industry contacts, Schlüter-Systems UK helped a disabled man to regain the facility to shower in his own home without the worry of leaks.

The existing situation
Josie and Simon Deane have spent 40 of their 49 years of married life in their 1930s semi-detached house in Watford. Both from Ireland, their eyes met at a dancehall in Cricklewood. But life has been more difficult in recent years. Over a slice of her famous (and delicious) Guinness cake, Josie told Schlüter representatives her husband’s story.

Around 9 years ago, Josie and Simon were driving back from the airport when they were involved in a serious accident with a lorry. Simon was sitting in the back seat of the couple’s car, which was pushed back into him fracturing his pelvis and trapping him in the vehicle. Airlifted to hospital, he was kept there for 5 months before he was deemed able to return home.

From being a strong, fit man who his wife says she struggled to keep up with at points, everyday life became a struggle for Simon. A plumber before the accident happened, he now had limited mobility in terms of bending down and could no longer stand up straight despite the two pieces of metal inserted into his back to help correct the injuries he had suffered.

The shower cubicle in the bathroom of the couple’s 1930’s semi-detached house had been causing issues for a few years. Made good with silicone sealing a number of times over, it had eventually become unusable, with significant leaks through the floor that were also seeping into the kitchen below. The couple had consulted plumbers on a couple of occasions, but they hadn’t been able to solve the problem. They’d stopped using the shower due to the damage it was causing, leaving them only with a shower over the bath, which Simon couldn’t use due to his mobility issues. As a result, he was walking to the local leisure centre every day to take his showers.

The process of solving an important issue
Schlüter-Systems were consulted on how to restore Simon the facility to shower in his own home without worry. To help do so, they engaged the services of Schlüter Approved Installers A&S Tiling and long-standing Schlüter distributor Decor Tiles & Floors.

Over the course of 6 days, Arnie and Saulius Kastasanovas ripped out the existing shower and replaced it with a new one. As the shower was situated in the corner of the room, the perpendicular walls against which it was positioned were stripped, studwork was introduced and Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD in 12.5mm was mechanically fixed to it to provide an even waterproof substrate for the white tiles and grout provided by Decor. A new 800 x 800mm low-level resin shower tray and enclosure were also provided by Decor alongside the shower and controls.

A&S Tiling also brought in Mizzen Construction, Heating and Plumbing Ltd to carry out the first and second fix plumbing for the project.

10mm Schlüter-SCHIENE trim in aluminium was used to provide a neat finish down the length of both edges of the installation. A Schlüter-SHELF in the Floral variant was installed into the cubicle to provide Simon with a place to put his shower products.

“Situations like Simon’s bring the problems of leaking showers into very sharp focus – here we’re not just talking about an impact on someone’s property but also on their basic existence”, says Mark Edmunds, Schlüter Area Sales Consultant, “Schlüter provides more than construction products - we’re essentially providing an insurance policy for properties. Simon can make use of his new shower safe in the knowledge that there will be no further damage to his beloved home”.

Schlüter-Systems would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to its collaborators on this project. Together, we have given one man back a much-needed facility that many of us take for granted.
