Schlüter Profiles Ensure Car Park Stairs Meet DDA Requirements

Tiler Chris Brown and his suppliers, Bristol Tile Ltd, knew exactly what was needed when he won the contract to tile 12 flights of stairs as part of a major refurbishment at the Bentall Shopping Centre, Kingston Upon Thames.

As the centre attracts over fourteen million visitors a year, the edges of the 104 stairs linking the six levels of the car park to the shops, are exposed to heavy mechanical stresses and can also represent a risk for injury. So the contractors were looking for the tile fixer to provide something with a high degree of visibility while also protecting the front edge of the steps from wear and damage.

After liaising with Tony Wilson, Contract Manager of Bristol Tile Ltd, Chris Brown, proprietor of Chris Brown Ceramic Tiling, installed the slip resistant Schlüter-TREP-B with its aluminium support section and replaceable thermoplastic tread. To comply with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), the Schlüter-TREP-TAP cover profile, for the stair risers, was also used.

In addition, Schlüter-DILEX movement joints were installed to protect the tiles in the lift areas, while Schlüter-RENO-RAMP created a stepless transition into the lifts.

The Schlüter-TREP range of stair nosing profiles from Schlüter-Systems Ltd are specially designed to protect the front edge of the stairs from wear and damage, preventing the installation from failing, while also providing a high degree of visibility. There are several profiles within the product range, each designed for particular types of applications.
