New fire protection components for floor drains

Building fires can have devastating consequences, but the hazards of smoke development are often underestimated. However, it is a documented fact that 950 of 1,000 fire victims die of smoke inhalation. In Germany, public buildings are subject to strict fire protection regulations that are intended to prevent such hazards. To prevent fires from spreading over several floor levels, these regulations require, for example, that most ceilings in public buildings be designed to withstand fires for at least 90 minutes. For a long time, lengthy pipe sections and drains were considered weak spots in ceiling construction in this regard. The new product of Schlüter-Systems, is able to change this situation.
The new construction element, KERDI-DRAIN BSR, is inserted into the designated floor collars before the installation of vertical floor drains. The fire protection component is coated with a bulk material that begins to foam up at temperatures over 150 degrees Celsius, thus providing a reliable block of the floor collar. This prevents the spreading of heat, flames, and smoke through the drainage system. The fire protection system is suitable for ceilings with the designations F 90 and F 120 (fire resistance for 90/ 120 minutes) and has been approved by the German Institute for Construction Technology (DIBt) in Berlin. The component is available in two sizes for combination with the most commonly used floor drains of the Schlüter-KERDI-DRAIN system (KD 10 BSR / KD 15 BSR).
The KERDI-DRAIN products of Schlüter-Systems are a complete system of floor drains and thin-set floor inserts that ensure the seamless and safe integration of waterproof floor assemblies built with Schlüter-KERDI and Schlüter-DITRA into the drainage system. Thanks to the new fire protection components, Schlüter-Systems is now in a position to offer complete waterproofing and drainage solutions for public buildings from a single source.
