The 1,500 square metres of tiling installed in the swimming pool surround, shower and changing areas at the Holmes Place Health Club in Croydon were made fully waterproof by installing the Schlüter-DITRA waterproofing and uncoupling matting on the floor, while Schlüter-KERDI was laid behind the wall tiles.

Without additional protection, no tiling installation can ever be described as waterproof in terms of stopping water reaching the substrate. Waterproof tiles, adhesives and grout is a term meaning that the material is able to perform in water and not break down. It doesn't stop water seeping through into the fabric of the building. Therefore, membranes are vitally important in environments such as pool surrounds and showers. The British Standards Institution recommends using such impervious membranes.
