Tilers working on a major refurbishment of The New Meadows Shopping Centre in Portadown were tasked with finding a permanent solution to bulging, cracked and debonded tiles. The original tiling installation had failed in several places, and protection was needed to ensure that the problem would not recur once the shopping centre had undergone its refurbishment. Originally the tiles were put down on to a screed, which, over the years had become badly damaged through naturally-occurring stress cracks. Those cracks in the substrate were transferred to the finished surface, causing the tiles to crack and debond.
Top of the shopping list to prevent it happening again, was the specialist uncoupling membrane Schlüter-DITRA. In addition, Schlüter-DILEX movement joints created individual tile fields, which move independently from each other, giving added protection to the tiles in the heavily-used entrance and mall.
